Phasing out lead ammunition in southern africa
A Regional Strategy and Transition Roadmap (2026 – 2035) has been circulated for review and inputs.
The report refers to the eight vulture species that range across the SADC region which are among the most ecologically important and most conservation-pressured birds on the African continent. Their population trajectories, declining across all species and all countries and driven by poisoning events that are preventable, represent one of the most significant conservation failures of the past two decades in Southern Africa. Lead ammunition is not the only cause of that failure, but it is a primary cause, and it is the cause most amenable to targeted intervention within a defined timeframe.
The report has established the normative framework. The science is settled. The international precedents are documented. The alternatives exist. This report has assembled the evidence, diagnosed the barriers, mapped the actors, and designed the roadmap.

RMIS commits to funding PMSA

Recognising this, The Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS) has proudly committed to funding the core budget for Predation Management South Africa (PMSA) for the current financial year.
Dewald Olivier, CEO of RMIS, said that this strategic investment is more than just a line item in a budget, it is a clear signal that sustainability, producer support, and long-term resilience in the red meat value chain are fundamental pillars of RMIS’s mission.
Olivier further stated, that “as we work together to build a resilient red meat sector, we invite the NWGA, RPO, WRSA, Mohair SA, and its members to stand with us in support of PMSA. Let us continue to develop practical, evidence-based solutions that protect our flocks, our farmers, and the future of livestock farming in South Africa.

This initiative underscores the pivotal role of the sheep industry in the nation’s agricultural landscape, focusing on enhancing lamb and mutton production, upholding rigorous standards, and fostering collaborative efforts to address industry challenges.
As predation poses a significant threat to sheep and goat farming, leading to substantial economic losses annually, RMIS is investigating the possibilities to collaborate closely with PMSA throughout 2025 to develop and implement effective predation management strategies.
